CAIRO: A member of the Muslim Brotherhood was beaten by attackers on Wednesday when he tried to register his candidacy for local elections, a fellow group member said, accusing the ruling party of responsibility for the incident.

We were heading to the registration office in the village of Kafr Saqr, in Zagazig [northwest of Cairo], to register our candidacy when a group of thugs blocked us, a Brotherhood member told AFP by telephone.

We asked them to move but they started to beat us, he said.

One man was taken to hospital and several others suffered some bruising, the member said on condition of anonymity, accusing the thugs of belonging to the ruling National Democratic Party (NDP).

A security official confirmed to AFP that one member of the Muslim Brotherhood was injured during a fight with some thugs near a registration office.

A series of similar incidents has taken place outside registration offices around the country, the official said.

Hundreds of Brotherhood members have been detained in the run-up to the April 8 elections, including 86 on Tuesday. -AFP
