ADDIS ABABA: The 53 nation African Union will hold its next summit in the Egyptian resort of Sharm El-Sheikh on June 30-July 1 and increasing the supply of drinking water will be the key theme, the AU said in a statement Thursday.
Access to drinking water for Africans is one of the eight Millennium Development Goals for 2015 as set out by the United Nations.
Other issues to be discussed by leaders include AU reform and a review of the organization carried out 12 heads of state.
The main conflicts on the continent, like Somalia and Darfur, will of course be on the order of the day, an AU representative told AFP via telephone.
The summit will be preceded by a meeting of AU representatives June 24-25, while foreign affairs ministers who form the AU s executive council will meet June 27-28.
The AU in 2002 replaced the Organization of African Unity, founded in 1963.
The body meets twice yearly for summits and has a rotating presidency currently held by the Tanzania s President Jakaya Kikwete. -AFP
