CAIRO: A policeman who assaulted a psychiatrist was sentenced to two years imprisonment on Sunday.

The Damanhour Criminal Court found Ahmed Antar Ibrahim guilty of physically assaulting Dr Magda El-Adly from the Nadim Center for the Rehabilitation of the Victims of Violence in August 2008.

The attack took place in April 2008 in a courthouse in Kafr El-Dawwar, Beheira governorate, where El-Adly was attending court proceedings in the case of two men allegedly tortured by Kafr El-Dawwar police officers.

During the trial police officers attempted to seize El-Adly’s handbag, which contained pictures showing injuries allegedly sustained during the attack by the police officers on the two men.

El-Adly was pushed down the courthouse stairs resulting in a dislocated shoulder and head injuries.

Ibrahim had been sentenced to six years imprisonment in August 2009, in absentia, but was re-tried as required under Egyptian law.
