Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry discussed Egypt’s contribution to reconstructing Iraq with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi on Monday, on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany, said Foreign Ministry spokesperson Ahmed Abou Zaid in a statement.
During the meeting, Shoukry renewed his congratulations to Al-Abadi on the victories achieved against the Islamic State group, also known by its Arabic acronym Daesh, stressing Egypt’s commitment to Iraq’s unity and sovereignty over all its territories. He also expressed Egypt’s eagerness to contribute to restoring post-Daesh security and stability in Iraq, particularly in the efforts of rehabilitation and reconstruction of liberated Iraqi cities.
The Iraqi prime minister emphasised “the special attention his country attaches to strengthening the areas of economic cooperation with Egypt, so as citizens in both countries could reap the fruits of such cooperation reflected in their lives and standard of living,” according to the statement.
Discussions between Shoukry and Al-Abadi focused on addressing the regional situation, especially the developments in Syria, the war in Yemen, and relations with neighbouring countries outside the Arab region. The two parties agreed on the need for Arab diplomacy to adopt a more active and powerful approach aimed at preserving the Arab world’s capabilities and stability, and putting an end to the ongoing wars and conflicts, said Abou Zaid.
During his participation in the Munich Security Conference, Shoukry held nearly 20 meetings and participated in various side events and seminars, read the statement.
