Egyptian Parliament Speaker Ali Abdel Aal on Saturday headed a coordinating meeting to draft an urgent clause regarding the city of Jerusalem.

The meeting, which was attended by parliamentary groups of different Arab countries, came on the sidelines of the 138th session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which started on Friday in Geneva.

Head of the Arab Parliament Mishal bin Fahm El-Salmy said that his parliament has supported the request of the Palestinian National Council and members of different Arab parliaments to submit an urgent clause against undermining the legal and historical status of the city of Jerusalem, which was affirmed by the resolutions of the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council considering Jerusalem as an occupied city.

The urgent clause, which aims preserve the identity of the city of Jerusalem and to emphasise its legal status, will be presented for a vote in the IPU next Tuesday.

This came as a further effort by Arab countries against US President Donald Trump’s decision to recognise Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and transfer the US embassy to it from Tel Aviv. Also, urgent meetings by Arab foreign ministers, leaders, and scholars were held to escalate the response to the issue.

During the meeting, the IPU’s Arab Group will also coordinate with the members of the Arab delegations who will run for vacant seats in the special committees of the IPU.

Abdel Aal headed on Tuesday to Geneva to attend IPU meetings and to head the Egyptian delegation and represent the Arab Group.
