Unemployment rate falls to 9.9% during Q2 2018: CAPMAS

Egypt’s unemployment rate reached 9.9% of the total labour force in second quarter (Q2) of the current year, compared to 10.6% in the first quarter (Q1) 2018, with a decrease of 0.7%, and a decrease of 2.1% over compared to Q2 previous year, according to the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS).

The CAPMAS noted that labour force estimated at 29.036 million (22,665 males, 6,371 females)  in Q2 with a decrease of 150,000 people by 0.5% compared to Q1 due to seasonal work, a decrease of 147,000 persons by 0.5% compared to Q2 2017.

CAPMAS pointed out that unemployed persons recorded 2,875 million people (1,527 males and 1,348 females) constitutes 9.9% of the total labour force with a decrease of 219,000 unemployed persons by 7.1% compared to Q1. Furthermore, a decrease of 621,000 unemployed person by 17.8% compared to Q2 2017.

The unemployment rate in urban areas registered 11.9% of the total urban labour force in Q2, compared to 12.1% in Q2, compared to13.6% in the Q2 2017. Meanwhile, unemployment rate in rural areas reached 8.5% of the total rural labour force in Q2 2018, compared to 9.5% in Q1 of 2018 and reached 10.7% in Q2 2017.
