Egypt will start the experimental operation of the electricity grid project with Sudan with a capacity of 300 MW in November.
According to sources at the Ministry of Electricity, the concrete bases for the electricity towers have been established, and Larson & Turbo will start the construction of the electrical connection line in the Egyptian territories at a cost of EGP 450m. Sudan will bear the cost of implementing the lines in its territory.
The sources added that the electricity officials are preparing a detailed report on the rates of implementation of the project for a lift to President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, especially, as it is included in the talks to be discussed during the presidential summit to be hosted by Khartoum next month under the chairmanship of Presidents Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi and Omar Al-Bashir.
During the past period, there have been many joint events between the two sides to consolidate relations between Egypt and Sudan in accordance with the directives of the two countries’ leaders. More than 22 summit meetings were held between the two presidents, Al-Bashir and Al-Sisi, and various projects were agreed in the fields of electricity, industry, sports, health, and education.
The two sides also reiterated their position on regional and international issues of common concern, which reflects the interests of the two sides at all levels and the fact that the security, stability, and development of both countries is an important and integral part of the security, stability, and development of the other state.
The sources pointed out that the link line starts in the first phase of the transformer station Toshka 2, heading to the substation of Arqin transformers in Sudan with a voltage of 220 kV, rising in the second phase to 500 kV.
The sources said that the project of electric connection with Sudan is part of Egypt’s plan to become a regional centre for energy.
The Egyptian government is seeking to end the electricity linkage project with Sudan, as soon as possible, as Egypt is keen to support the African countries and the Nile Basin to meet their electricity needs.
The sources said that Egypt has all the potential for the implementation of projects linking electricity with Arab and European countries, and seeks to benefit from the surplus of production achieved locally and exported abroad, and the electric connection with Sudan allows Egypt to connect with the rest of Africa and provide the electricity they need.
