Egypt’s Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry headed on Wednesday to Japan to take part in the ministerial meeting of the Tokyo International Conference of African Development (TICAD) on 6,7 October.
Furthermore, Shoukry is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with his Japanese counterpart and Japan’s Prime Minister on regional issues of common interest, as well as bilateral cooperation.
According to the ministry’s statement, the cooperation between the two countries includes power station maintenance, electricity, infrastructure, health, and education projects, such as the Egypt-Japan Education Partnership (EJEP) and the Egypt Japan University of Science and Technology.
The statement also referred to ‘the Japanese support’ in establishing the Grand Egyptian Museum, the fourth line of Cairo’s metro, and the Abu El-Reesh Japanese Children’s Hospital.
“The amount of the Egyptian-Japanese trade exchange reached around $1.8 bn in 2017,” said the ministry spokesperson, Ahmed Hafez, adding that 50 Japanese companies are operating in Egypt.
TICAD was launched in 1993 by the Japanese government to promote African development, security, and peace. Foreign Ministers of African countries will participate in the ministerial meeting, as well as a number of African regional organisations, and representatives of some Asian countries, such as China, and India, according to Egypt’s Foreign Ministry statement.
