A bilateral cooperation committee between Cairo and Rabat will work on enhancing the mutual relations between the two countries, and fulfil the interests of the Egyptian and Moroccan people, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said on Tuesday.
During a press conference with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita, Shoukry said that both countries are preparing this committee. He added that his visit is important to bolster the relations between the two countries.
He also stated that Egypt is closely following the latest updates in Libya, warning that “Turkey’s policies to smuggle weapons into Libya affects the stability of the surrounding countries, and helps support militias.”
Moreover, Shoukry also asserted that Qatar is following the same policies as Turkey. Relations between Egypt and Turkey became tense, following the ouster of the former Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in 2013.
On Syria, Shoukry said that the Arab country has to follow several measures in order to be readmitted to the Arab League. One of these measures is to politically solve the ongoing crisis through the UN’s vision. The Syrian regime has been lately trying to return back to the Arab diplomatic scene by sending Syrian political, security, or cultural officials to several Arab countries.
On 27 December, the UAE announced that it will reopen its embassy in Damascus for the first time since 2011. Similarly, another example is the visit of the top aide to President Bashar Al-Assad, and the National Security Chief, Major General Ali Mamlouk, to Egypt to discuss political and security issues, including the efforts to combat terrorism with Egyptian officials.
King Mohamed VI of Morocco was among the foreign dignitaries who attended Al-Sisi’s inauguration ceremony on 8 June 2014. Upon the official announcement of the presidential elections’ results on 3 July 2014, Morocco’s King Mohammed VI congratulated Al-Sisi. King Mohamed VI said that he is convinced Al-Sisi has the qualities of “a veteran statesman” and the “qualifications of an insightful leader” to support him in undertaking this responsibility.
