The Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohamed Shaker, issued strict instructions to the heads of electricity distribution companies to collect all delayed bills on homes, shops, and government agencies.
Electricity Ministry sources told Daily News Egypt that the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company decided to disconnect the service from those who refuse to pay their bills.
The heads of electricity distribution companies appointed earlier this year issued strict instructions to electricity collectors in order to collect arrears on consumers in the domestic and commercial sectors. This applies not only to arrears but also to the obligation to pay monthly consumption.
According to the sources, based on the mechanisms of collecting new arrears, the subscriber who has not paid the dues of the ministry is notified, even if it is one month. In the past, distribution companies were only warning subscribers, but as per the new system the subscriber will be cut off on the same day if the participant does not respond and settle the debt with the electricity company.
Sources said that the electricity sector is a vital sector, and the lack of financial liquidity will not enable the sector to pump more investments and create more projects to provide energy to all consumers with the highest quality and efficiency.
The sources said that the failure to pay the bill can paralyse the sector and disrupt projects and investment plans, in addition to the inability of the sector to pay its obligations to the ministry of petroleum and foreign companies executing projects.
