UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Sunday, that the two-state solution is imperative in order to solve the situation in the Middle East. ‘Without two states, there is no solution,’ he stated.
Guterres said that he is participating in the Arab League Summit taking place in Tunis, to deepen the relationship between the UN and the Arab world.
Furthermore, the UN secretary general added that the UN is stepping up support for Arab states to fight terrorism. This will help open the door for Arab solutions to Arab problems, he stressed.
“I appealed for unity of the Arab world as a fundamental condition for peace and prosperity in the region,” Guterres added.
On the other hand, Guterres emphasised that any resolution to the Syrian conflict must guarantee the territorial integrity of Syria–including the occupied Golan Heights.
Earlier, the United States President Donald Trump signed an official proclamation recognising Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights.
Syria, a country divided by an ongoing civil war for its ninth year, remains extremely divided. As Syrian Kurds control most of the country’s north east, the Syrian government is controlling the rest, while Idlib is currently controlled by the Al-Qaida local affiliated group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS)–formerly Nusra Front.
Regarding the situation in Algeria, he welcomed efforts toward a peaceful and democratic transition in Algeria, to address the concerns of the Algerian people.
