The Supreme Media Council summoned on Sunday TV presenter Reham Saeed for investigation over body-shaming comments during the last episode of her TV programme “Sabaya”.
The council also summoned the legal representative of the private-owned Al-Hayat TV channel which was airing the programme.
Meanwhile, Al-Hayat TV channel suspended Saeed’s TV programme after she criticised obese people, saying “they are dead and burden to their families and the state.”
The National Council for Women (NCW) has filed a complaint against Saeed, saying that her comments humiliated Egyptian women and contained inappropriate words and descriptions, demanding the council to take necessary measures in this regard.
Saeed was widely criticised for her remarks, as social media users including public figures and celebrities posted against her and launched hashtags denouncing her statements.
On the other hand, Gamal Shawky, head of complaints department in the media council, said they summoned the chairperson of Al-Nahar TV channel and TV presenter Tamer Amin after a complaint filed by the NCW against Amin, accusing him of offending parliament member Rania Alwani.
The complaint also included accusations that the channel has violated the code of media ethics during its coverage of the attack on the National Cancer Institute.
The Committee is intensifying its activity this week to discuss a number of complaints against channels, newspapers, and websites, he concluded.
