President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi discussed the Libyan cause with his Russia counterpart Vladimir Putin in a phone conversation on Friday. The conversation also included addressing bilateral relations between the two countries and issues of mutual concern, topped by the Libyan situation.
According to a statement from the Egyptian presidency spokesperson Bassam Radi, the Egyptian stance regarding the Libyan issue is based on rejecting all foreign interventions in Libyan affairs. this is to help prevent the negative impacts of these interventions and achieve security and stability in Libya.
For his part, the Russian president said that his country is seeking a political solution for the Libyan crisis. The two leaders agreed to continue mutual efforts to reach a political solution for the crisis and to counter terrorism.
On Wednesday, Russia and Turkey called for a ceasefire in Libya from Sunday 12 January, the call which was rejected by the Libyan Arab Armed Forces (LAAF) led by general Khalifa Haftar, while the Tripoli-based Government of National Accord (GNA) welcomed the call.
Al-Sisi and Putin also discussed the latest updates in the Gulf region, stressing the need for de-escalation in order to protect safety and security in the area.
Relations between Egypt and Russia enhanced in the past six years since Al-Sisi came to office. The two countries share the same points of views regarding the situation in Syria and Libya. Both countries support the Libyan Arab Armed Forces (LAAF).
