The Ministry of Interior has announced pardons for 2,957 prisoners, and conditional pardon of 498 others, in celebration of the 68th anniversary of National Police Day.
The prison sector held committees to examine the files of prison inmates across the nation to determine the most suitable cases that deserve pardoning.
This comes as part of “keenness to apply the modern concept of the penal policy,” according to the ministry of interior.
Egypt regularly grants pardons to prisoners on major religious, and national occasions.
Article 155 of the Egyptian constitution, stipulates that the president has the power to issue a pardon, or mitigate a final sentence, after consulting with the cabinet.
National Police Day commemorates 50 police officers that were killed and another 80 wounded on 25 January 1952, when they refused demands from British occupation forces to hand over their weapons and evacuate a police station in Egypt’s Ismailia governorate.
A new logo was designed for the 68th anniversary of National Police Day, and the Ministry of Interior is set to organise a ceremony at the police academy headquarters to honour the families of police officers killed in the line of duty.
