MP Bahaa El-Din Abu Shoka, head of the legislative and constitutional affairs committee in parliament, has revealed he will submit a draft law on citizen donations to the Tahya Misr Fund. The donations will be used to finance government efforts to curb the ongoing coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak.
Abu Shoka said on Saturday that the draft law aims to make it easier for Egyptians to help the state carry its “burden” in dealing with the coronavirus outbreak in Egypt. The donations will, in accordance with regulations, be made commensurate with the contributor’s monthly wage.
Those with salaries of over EGP 5,000 will donate 5% of their monthly pay. Those with salaries of more than EGP 10,000 will contribute 10%, while those with more than EGP 15,000 salary will give 15%. Employees with salaries exceeding EGP 20,000 will donate 20% of their monthly earnings to the fund.
On Sunday, the Suez Canal Authority announced it had donated EGP 5m to the Tahya Misr Fund as its part in helping to combat the coronavirus.
Mohamed Mokhtar, Spokesperson for the Tahya Misr Fund, said on Saturday that the coronavirus crisis needs “concerted effort.”
Mokhtar added in televised remarks that the fund has launched an initiative dubbed “Together, we will get of this crisis”. It includes a two-pronged approach, one to tackle the consequence of flooding that hit the country in March, with the other approach to tackle the effects of the coronavirus outbreak.
On Sunday, Egypt reported 103 coronavirus cases and 7 deaths, bringing the country’s total to 1,173 cases and 78 deaths, with 247 cases recovered.
