Egypt’s Ministry of Interior denied, on Tuesday, claims that a resident in the Giza neighbourhood of Munib was killed by a police officer.
In a statement, the ministry said, “The accounts, published by media outlets belonging to the outlawed Muslim Brotherhood, saying that protests erupted after a young man died due to being assaulted by a policeman are baseless.”
The Ministry of Interior elaborated, “A scuffle took place in the neighbourhood between two parties due to financial disputes. They assaulted and beat each other. One of those became fatigued during the incident, and was transported to a hospital where he died of a heart attack.”
Police officers questioned the victim’s brother who, the ministry said, did not accuse anyone for his brother’s death.
The Ministry of Interior statement added that all required legal procedures related to the incident are ongoing.
Late on Monday, some people, including the family of the young man who died, reportedly gathered in front of the Munib police station, accusing two police personnel of torturing a young man which led to his death, an accusation the Ministry of Interior has denied. The crowds were eventually dispersed.
