The Beheira Teachers’ Syndicate has demanded that it receive the 33.5 feddans of land in Alam Al-Rum, allocated to it by the Matrouh Governorate.
The syndicate’s members said that they are looking to receive the land, so that a coastal resort project can be developed on it.
Syndicate Committee Head Abdel Moneim Abu Al-Saud said that a request was made in 1989 to purchase a plot of land in the Matrouh Governorate.
The syndicate has presented all documents proving that there are no disputes relating to the plot of land, and the hand-over has been approved by the Armed Forces Engineering Authority and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.
Abu Al-Saud added that the price was set by the Matrouh City Council at a value of EGP 5 per square metre. The committee paid a down-payment of 15% of the land’s value, after which all procedures were undertaken and a contract signed with the head of the Matrouh City Council.
Despite this, the plot of land has not yet been delivered, although the Beheira Teachers’ Syndicate has all the relevant documents to prove their land ownership.
“In 2001, the issue was completely transferred to the investment office in Matrouh Governorate, and a committee was formed under the chairmanship of the Secretary General of the Governorate at that time to examine the issue,” Abu Al-Saud said, “The syndicate’s committee submitted all documents to the governorate’s primary committee that expressed its approval for the project, and the file was sent to the supreme committee headed by the Governor of Matrouh.”
He added that the governorate’s supreme committee estimated the price at EGP 90 per sqm, which the syndicate complied with. A new cheque was written with 10% of the land value, although this was rejected by the governorate with no reason provided.
Abu Al-Saud said that all business related to land development ground to a halt due to the 25 January Revolution, which prompted the syndicate to file a lawsuit to preserve its right to obtain the plot of land.
