Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly has issued a decree to form and organise the Board of Directors the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), which will be headed by Minister of Tourism and Antiquities Khaled Al-Anani.
The Board of Directors will consist of executive heads of the GEM, the National Museum of Egyptian Civilization, the Egyptian Tourism Promotion Board, and the General Authority for Investment and Free Zones (GAFI).
This comes in addition to the Secretary-General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities; the Chairperson of the Egyptian Tourism Promotion Board; the legal advisor to the Minister of Tourism and Antiquities; the general supervisor of the GEM project and the surrounding area; and the deputy general supervisor of the GEM for archaeological affairs.
The decree stipulated that the term of board membership will be two years, subject to renewal. The Board will meet at least once a month, in addition to whenever the need arises, upon the invitation of its Chairperson.
In accordance with the decree, the GEM Chairperson shall head board meetings and manage the discussions. The Board of Directors may invite employees from the GEM or external experts to attend the Board’s sessions, so that they can give statements or clarifications requested by the Board. These statements and clarifications will be given regarding the topics presented, although these individuals will not have a counted vote in deliberations.
The board also includes among its other membership: Chairperson of Banque Misr Mohamed El Etreby, former Minister of Antiquities Mamdouh Al-Damaty, former Director of Cairo Regional Center for International Arbitration Mohamed Abdel Raouf, and Assistant Minister of Finance for Administrative and Technical Development Khaled Nofal.
Other board members are: Mona Ibrahim, Head of the Asian Cooperation Sector at the Ministry of International Cooperation; Mohamed Hassanein, President of the Meris Credit Classification Company; and Hisham Al-Zemiti, former Assistant Minister of Foreign Affairs. In addition, Hisham Danana, Professor of Marketing and Strategic Management at the American University in Cairo; Mahmoud Abdullah, an expert in asset management and restoration structuring; and Mirhan Ragab, an expert in business administration and international contracts, will be part of the new GEM’s board.
Moreover, the GEM Chairperson is set to form the board’s technical secretariat under his leadership. It will undertake the necessary preliminary work for the board meetings, in addition to preparing the work agenda.
