Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry received a phone call, on Monday, from Tor Wennesland, the United Nations (UN) Special Envoy for the Middle East Peace Process.
Ahmed Hafez, Spokesperson for Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that Shoukry highlighted Egyptian efforts during the recent period to create an enabling environment for re-engaging the Palestinian and Israeli sides in the negotiation track.
This has also seen an intensification of consultations with regional and international partners through several tracks. The most recent of these has been the emergency meeting of the Arab League which was held at the ministerial level.
Shoukry also reaffirmed Egypt’s steadfast position on the Palestinian issue, and its support for the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people leading to the establishment of their independent state according to June 1967 borders. This is based on the principle of the two-state solution, and in accordance with international legitimacy decisions.
For his part, Wennesland expressed his aspiration to work and coordinate with Cairo in order to advance the peace process during the coming period. These efforts would also work towards achieving the required breakthrough in the peace process.
The UN Coordinator also stressed the importance of Egypt’s role in supporting a lasting, just, and comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue and achieving the desired peace in the region. He also applauded Egypt’s continuous efforts to heal the Palestinian rift and achieve national reconciliation.
