Egyptian production designer and art director Mona Mekkawi won the Emmy award for the Best Historical Documentary for her film “Oversight”. She became the first Egyptian woman to get the American prize.
She wrote on Twitter, “I am so honored to be part of this amazing achievement.”
“Oversight” was awarded the regional Emmy, among two other Emmys.
The Emmy is an American award given to various television series and programmes first established in 1949. It is an equivalent to the Academy Award or the Oscar which is limited to film production while the Emmy is specialized in television.
Mekkawi started her career at 17 and became one of the youngest production designers in Egypt.
She has worked in hundreds of commercials and assisted in several TV series and movies in the Middle East, until she moved to the US, where she started from scratch.
Her thesis project film with Director Omar El-Zohairy “The Aftermath of the inauguration of the Public Toilet at Kilometer 375” was nominated in several international film festivals, including Cannes, Palm Springs, Dubai, Durban, Nashville and Montpellier, among others. She also won the Santa Lucia International Competition.
