The Olympic Village in Tokyo reopened its doors in preparation for the Paralympic Games scheduled for 24 August – 5 September. The Tokyo Paralympics will be held without spectators at all venues due to an alarming rise in coronavirus (COVID-19) infections in the host city and many other parts of Japan, about a week before the opening of the event.
“I understand that there are more challenges for Paralympic champions compared to their Olympic counterparts,” said Tokyo 2020 CEO Toshiro Muto, adding that the organizing committee will do everything possible to protect athletes from contracting COVID-19.
The safety of athletes is an issue of concern to Tokyo 2020 organizers as they play in conditions that make them more vulnerable to contracting the virus.
And, as happened in the Olympics, preventive measures against the coronavirus will be mandatory within the Olympic Village facilities, including face masks, social distancing, and daily PCR examination.
The Paralympic athletes will only stay in Tokyo. The Olympic Village will start receiving the athletes a week before the start of the event.
