During 2021, the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology achieved important steps in implementing Egypt’s digital strategy, which aims to adopt the latest global technology and support innovative thought to create an integrated digital society through which the Egyptian person is built, the state’s sectors are developed, and Egypt’s position on the telecommunications industry map is strengthened.
According to the Ministry of Communications, the indicators of the communications and information technology sector rose to maintain its position as the highest growth sector in the country.
In a report on the 2021 harvest, the Ministry of Communications said that the sector’s growth rate increased to 16% in 2020/2021, compared to 15.2% in 2019/2020, while the sector’s contribution to the GDP increased from 4.4% in 2019/2020 to 5% in the last fiscal year.
Digital exports grew from $4.1bn in 2019/2020 to $4.5bn in 2020/2021, and Egypt was among the 10 fastest growing countries for digital inclusion, according to a report issued by the Roland Berger Foundation.
Meanwhile, Egypt’s ranking advanced 43 places in the mobile phone e-wallet regulations index issued by the International Association for Mobile Networks GSMA for the year 2020, to become 36th among 90 countries that adopt this type of services globally, compared to 79th in 2019, achieving the highest percentage Index growth worldwide.
In the report, the Ministry of Communications indicated that Egypt’s ranking advanced five places in the comprehensive Internet index 2021, to become 73rd among 120 countries, compared to 78th from the previous year. It also ranked fourth among the 29 African countries included in the index, according to the report issued by the Economist Research Unit.
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has completed its projects to build a digital Egypt by implementing a large number of projects in cooperation with the state sectors to digitize government services and achieve digital transformation in all sectors.
65 new government services were launched on the digital Egypt platform, bringing the total to nearly 100 digital services, and making them available through multiple outlets other than the platform, namely Egypt Post, and the call center 15999, while providing multiple payment methods for electronic payment.
The year 2021 witnessed an increase in the number of trainees and a doubling of the technical training budget from 148,000 trainees with a budget of EGP 400m in 2020, to a target of training 200,000 trainees with a budget of EGP 1.1bn during the fiscal year 2021/2022.
The trial operation of 2 Digital Egypt Creativity Centers and the actual operation of 5, bringing the total to 7 centers, while work is underway to establish 9 others at a total cost of EGP 1.5bn for the two phases, as part of a plan to establish a center in each governorate with the aim of providing technical training and fostering creativity.
Also, about 50,000 workers in the state’s administrative apparatus were trained, including those who moved to the new administrative capital, and workers in information systems and digital transformation units.
The Institute of Information Technology has also graduated more than 6000 trainees in the fields required for future professions, including the Internet of things, data analysis, artificial intelligence, information security, embedded systems, business robots, and digital arts. The employment rate of the institute’s graduates is about 85%.
The number of beneficiaries of the training content on the digital platform of the Institute for e-learning “Maharah Tech” reached about 300,000, while graduates of the “Work from Your Home” initiative were able to achieve revenues of nearly $100,000.
