Egypt’s Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly affirmed Egypt’s keenness to reach a legally binding agreement with both Ethiopia and Sudan on the disputed points regarding the filling and operation of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
In a statement on the Cabinet’s Facebook page on Tuesday, Madbouly said that his country is keen to achieve development in Africa.
The prime minister explained that the agreement that Egypt is keen on achieving is based on balancing between allowing Ethiopia to achieve the maximum possible benefit from the GERD in the field of electricity generation and achieving sustainable development in exchange for no harm befalling Egypt and Sudan.
“Egypt is interested in resuming negotiations as soon as possible with the aim of expediting the resolution of the technical and legal dispute points in order to reach a fair, balanced, and equitable agreement,” Madbouly said.
He stated that any consensus should take into account Egypt’s water scarcity and its dependence mainly on the Blue Nile’s water.
Moreover, Madbouly mentioned that there is no doubt that achieving development in all of the Nile Basin’s countries has always been one of Egypt’s priorities by providing assistance and expertise that contribute to assisting brotherly countries within the framework of bilateral cooperation as the basis for providing stability to the peoples of those countries.
