A grenade attack inside a police station in Ethiopia’s northern Amhara region has left at least five people dead, a local official said on Tuesday.
Mengistu Ali, Chief Police Inspector of Fourth police station in Dessie city administration, Amhara region, said the deadly attack which happened Monday afternoon was carried out by fugitives of the law.
Ali said two security personnel are among the five fatalities of the grenade attack, state affiliated media outlet Fana Broadcasting Corporate (FBC) reported.
The grenade attack suspects numbering four in total were already wanted prior for acts of murder, chief of Dessie city administration police department Asamin Mulat said.
Mulat said one suspect is among the grenade attack fatalities. He further said another suspect who was injured during the attack was subsequently arrested by security forces.
Dessie city administration police department disclosed security forces have managed to pacify the situation in the aftermath of the attack.
In May, authorities in Amhara region announced they had arrested 4,500 individuals, some 210 were suspected of murder.
Ethiopian authorities had said the arrests were made as parts of efforts to ensure lasting peace and order in the Amhara region, Ethiopia‘s second populous region.
