A new batch of political prisoners will be freed on the occasion of 30 June revolution’s anniversary, member of the Presidential Pardon Committee, Tariq Al-Awadi, said on Monday.

He added in a social media post that more prisoners will be released on the occasion of Eid Al-Adha.

On 16 June, President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi pardoned three convicts in the cabinet clashes incident case, which dates back to 2011. The pardoned prisoners had been sent to 15 years in prison.

Article 52 of the Prisons Organization Law 396 of 1956 permits “the conditional release of anyone who is finally sentenced to a freedom-restricting penalty if he spends half the sentence in prison and his behavior while in prison calls for confidence in his self-correction, unless in his release there is a danger to the person.”

The Presidential Pardon Committee, formed in 2016 and reactivated by President Al-Sisi in April 2022, aims to release prisoners and reintegrate them into society.

Over the past weeks, many political prisoners have been pardoned. The committee received many requests after its reactivation regarding detainees, explaining that the committee’s role was expanded to the cases of bad debt.
