Minister of Foreign Affairs Sameh Shoukry met with his Burundian counterpart Albert Shingiro on Tuesday on the side-lines of the UN General Assembly in New York to discuss ways to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
According to a statement by the ministry, Shoukry stressed Egypt’s keenness to strengthen cooperation with Burundi in various fields.
The FM also reviewed the executive steps taken to what was agreed upon during the visit of the Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye to Egypt in the electricity, health, agricultural production, construction, and infrastructure sectors, as well as the provision of scholarships for students from the state of Burundi.
For his part, Shingiro thanked Egypt for transferring its expertise and building the capacities of Burundian cadres through various training courses organised by the Egyptian Agency for Partnership and Development and other Egyptian institutions.
The two sides also discussed the priorities of Africa ahead of the upcoming UN Conference of Parties on Climate Change (COP27) that will be held in Sharm El-Sheikh this November and the importance of highlighting the continent’s problems, as it is the most affected by the negative repercussions of climate change.
Moreover, they stressed the importance of uniting the African voice in the conference to produce results that meet the aspirations of the continent’s peoples, especially regarding adapting to the negative effects of climate change and the issue of climate finance.
