Egypt’s Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad has met with Minister of Local Development Hisham Amna, Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker, and Minister of State for Military Production Mohamed Salah El-Din Mostafa, to follow up on the national project to establish a municipal solid waste treatment (waste-to-energy) plant in Abu Rawash.
The meeting also included Governor of Giza Ahmed Rashid and Director of the National Center for Planning State Land Uses Nasser Fawzi.
Fouad stressed the importance of waste-to-energy projects. She stated that this project aims to create a healthy and clean environment, achieve an economic return, and produce usable energy.
The projects help in reducing the amount of waste that is buried in sanitary landfills, provide land areas that are allocated for the establishment of sanitary landfills, and avoid accumulations inside governorates that lead to environmental damage and emissions.
Fouad noted that a tariff has been approved for converting waste into energy, at a value of 140 piasters per kilowatt, in accordance with Electricity Feed Tariff Resolution No. 41 of 2019, in cooperation with the Ministries of Local Development, Electricity and Energy.
The minister further added that the way has been opened for private investors to invest in this field, and a company has submitted a technical study for this technology, and it has been studied and reviewed by the relevant ministries, and the environmental impact assessment study for the submitted project has been reviewed and approved.
For his part, Hisham Amna affirmed his ministry’s keenness to coordinate with Giza Governorate to complete the necessary licenses for the land on which the project will be built to ensure its success.
