Egypt extends condolences to Greece over deadly train collision

Egypt extended condolences to Greece over the victims of a tragic accident involving the collision of two trains in the city of Larissa, in the centre of the country, which resulted in multiple deaths and injuries to dozens of people.

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that the government and people of Egypt extend their deepest condolences to the families of the victims, wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Egypt affirmed its solidarity and support for the friendly Greek Government and people in this painful incident.

A passenger train collided head-on with a freight train in the northern Tempi Valley on Tuesday night.

Several cars derailed and a few burst into flames. 

At least 36 people were killed and 85 injured in Greece late Tuesday when two trains on a trip between Athens and Thessaloniki collided in the north of the country, according to a new toll released by aid groups on Wednesday.

No information is available yet on the causes of the crash, the severity of which caused the entire first locomotives and carriages to crash and kill drivers on the spot.

“In the early morning hours, the images showed charred wagons amid metal plates and broken windows.” Other less damaged vehicles overturned and rescuers used ladders to flush survivors out. According to emergency service information at night, 194 passengers were evacuated.
