Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received, Saturday, a delegation from the European Parliament headed by MP Terry Mariani, member of the Foreign Affairs Committee and Sub-Committee on Human Rights of the Parliament.
Ambassador Ahmed Abu Zeid, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the meeting focused on the historical and multifaceted relations between Egypt and the European Union (EU), which are linked in a number of areas of cooperation, especially parliamentary, economic, development and energy cooperation.
The importance of strengthening the mechanisms of parliamentary cooperation between Egypt and the EU was underlined as a platform for the meeting between representatives of peoples, as well as building on the momentum of Egyptian-European relations and translating it into more concrete cooperation in various fields.
Minister Shoukry was keen to review the positive developments in cooperation between Egypt and the various institutions and agencies of the EU.
He also thanked the European official for his efforts in informing members of Parliament about the developments in Egypt in various economic and social fields, as well as the development in the protection and promotion of human rights, especially the progress made in the implementation of the national human rights strategy.
On the other hand, the meeting dealt with number of regional and international issues of common interest, foremost of which is the Ukrainian crisis, coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the outbreak of the crisis, as well as the current escalation in the Palestinian territories, developments of the Libyan crisis and efforts to address the phenomenon of illegal migration.
Minister Shoukry also briefed the European delegation on Egypt’s positions on these issues and efforts to reach a settlement and restore stability and international peace.
