An Egyptian ship loaded with 500 tonnes of relief aid arrived in the Syrian port of Latakia on Monday to support efforts to cope with the earthquake’s repercussions and provide relief to those affected.
In implementation of the directives of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to continue to provide support and assistance to the brotherly Syrian people in facing the effects of the February 6, 2023 earthquake, an Egyptian ship loaded with about 500 tonnes of relief aid arrived in Latakia port Monday to support efforts to face the repercussions of the earthquake and provide relief to those affected, said Ahmed Fahmy, the presidency spokesperson.
Ambassador Mahmoud Omar, charge d’affaires of the Egyptian Embassy in Damascus, said that this is the second shipment of relief aid to the Syrian people through the port of Latakia, loaded with about 500 tonnes of medical, food and living materials, and will be handed over to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent for distribution to the areas affected by the earthquake.
Omar stressed the depth of the historical relations between Egypt and Syria and the deep fraternal ties that unite the two peoples, saying that it is natural for Egyptians to stand by their Syrian brothers to overcome the consequences of the humanitarian disaster caused by the earthquake, while continuing to provide assistance through the air and sea bridge that was established to support the affected areas.
Tayseer Habib, Chairperson of the Latakia Governorate Council, expressed his gratitude to the Egyptian government and people for their humanitarian contribution and for providing assistance to their brothers in Syria to overcome their ordeal.
Following the delivery of the aid shipment to the Syrian Arab Red Crescent (SARC), Amer Hilal, the Governor of Latakia met with Charge d’Affaires of the Egyptian Embassy in Damascus, Mahmoud Omar. He expressed Syria’s gratitude to Egypt and its people for providing assistance to cope with the repercussions of the earthquake.
Omar said the aid will not be the last to provide relief to those affected by the earthquake.
