US President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday that he is running for a second term in the 2024 elections.
Biden, 80, posted a video of his upcoming presidential campaign on Twitter.
“Personal freedoms in the US are under attack by Republican extremists,” Biden said in the video.
“Every generation has a moment where they must defend democracy,” said Biden, who will be 86 when he ends his second term.
“That’s why I decided to seek re-election as president of the United States of America. Join me. Let’s finish the job.”
“When I ran for president four years ago, I said we are in a battle for the soul of America. And we still are. The question we are facing is whether in the years ahead we have more freedom or less freedom. More rights or fewer,” Biden said in a 3-minute video announcing his run.
Biden’s campaign will be run by Julie Chávez Rodriguez, 45, a well-known political activist and director of the White House’s Office of Governmental Affairs.
Following the announcement of his candidacy, the Republican Party considered Biden to be “detached from reality.”
“Biden is so detached from reality that after causing one crisis after another, he sees himself as worth four more years,” the Republican National Committee said, warning that if he wins, “inflation will continue to skyrocket, crime rates will rise, and American families will be worse off.”
