Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly expressed Egypt’s aspiration to strengthen cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) during the coming period, especially in light of the great importance of the migration file for Egypt, which hosts 9 million migrants and refugees.
This came during Madbouly’s meeting with the newly elected director-general of the IOM, Amy Pope, on the sidelines of his participation on behalf of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, in the events of the International Conference on migration and development in Rome.
During the meeting, the prime minister congratulated Amy Pope on her election as the first woman to assume the post of director general of the IOM, praising her contributions during her tenure as deputy director general, and the successes she achieved in the file of reforms of the organization.
Madbouly stressed the importance of the need to develop mechanisms to deal with the migration file, and the development of work platforms that help address the roots of the illegal migration file, and contribute to reducing the burden on the countries hosting refugees.
For her part, the director-general-elect of the IOM thanked Egypt for hosting large numbers of refugees and migrants and providing all the necessary services to them, despite the challenges and economic burdens that this entails.
She added that the geographical proximity made Egypt receive the largest number of Sudanese refugees, following the outbreak of the conflict in Sudan.
Later on Monday, Prime Minister Mustafa Madbouly headed Egypt’s delegation to the opening session of the UN Food Systems Assessment Moment 2023 on Monday, in the presence of a number of heads of state and government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni of Italy and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Ambassador Nader Saad, spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, said that Dr. Madbouly reviewed the efforts made by the Egyptian state to promote the transformation of food systems, including the formation of the National Committee for Food and Nutrition Systems headed by the Prime Minister, with the aim of establishing a sustainable national food system and reaching better indicators of food security by 2030.
Madbouly also expressed Egypt’s full support for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).
He noted the Egyptian state’s commitment to the diversion process due to the integration of food security with a number of sustainable development goals, such as improving health, environmental sustainability, improving water resource management and empowering women, among others.
This came during a meeting Monday between Madbouly and Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Xu Donino.
Efforts to transform [Egypt 2030] into a healthy and sustainable food system are an integral part of our national development vision, Madbouly said, noting that the Egyptian state is implementing this vision through the “A Decent Life” initiative to develop rural Egyptian villages.
He also stressed the government’s interest in cooperating with the FAO to obtain technical support and the necessary expertise, adding that with limited resources for water and arable land, there is no alternative but to adopt innovative technological methods in the field of agriculture to maximize productivity.
