Egypt on Tuesday condemned a suicide bomber attack in Somalia that killed at least 20 soldiers.
The attack took place at a training camp in the Somali capital, Mogadishu, on Monday. The al-Shabab terrorist group claimed responsibility.
Egypt’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement that it “condemns in the strongest terms the suicide terrorist attack that targeted an army training camp in the Somali capital Mogadishu on Monday, resulting in the death and injury of a number of victims of the Somali army.”
The ministry expressed its “sincere condolences to the government and the people of the brotherly Republic of Somalia in this painful injury and to the families of the victims, wishing a speedy recovery to all the injured.”
The statement also stressed Egypt’s “stand by brotherly Somalia in the face of all forms of violence, extremism and terrorism.”
Witnesses said a suicide bomber entered the camp where the XIV Infantry Brigade was about to start a new training course, and detonated the explosive belt he was wearing.
The attack is the latest in a series of deadly attacks by al-Shabab in Somalia. The group is linked to al-Qaeda and is seeking to overthrow the Somali government and establish an Islamic state.
