Egypt’s Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, and Canada’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Steven Guilbeault, have been appointed as co-chairs of the committee to facilitate negotiations on climate finance and implementation mechanisms for the COP28, the next UN climate summit. The announcement was made by Sultan Al-Jaber, the designated president of COP28, which will take place in Dubai later this year.
The co-chairs will work on reaching a global agreement on how to mobilize and deliver financial resources to support developing countries in their efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change. They will also address other implementation issues, such as technology transfer and capacity building.
Fouad said that she will build on the achievements of COP27, which was held in Egypt last year, and launched the Loss and Damage Fund, a mechanism to help vulnerable countries cope with the impacts of climate change. She also praised the UAE for its preparations for COP28 and its early consultations on various topics.
Egypt and Canada are both active players in the international climate arena. Egypt leads the African Group of Negotiators on Climate Change, while Canada is part of the High Ambition Coalition, a group of countries that advocate for more ambitious climate action.
