Hassan El-Khatib appointed as Egypt’s Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade

Hassan El-Khatib, a non-executive board member of the Central Bank of Egypt and former Managing Director of Equity at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, has been appointed as the Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade. With over 35 years of distinguished professional experience in direct investment and banking, El-Khatib brings a wealth of expertise to his new role.

His extensive career spans three decades, during which he has worked across Egypt, North Africa, Turkey, and Central and Eastern Europe. El-Khatib holds board memberships in various companies within sectors such as insurance, industrial, pharmaceutical, tourism, real estate, oil and gas, telecommunications, and textiles.

From 2019 to 2023, El-Khatib served as a non-executive board member of the Sovereign Fund of Egypt. Before that, he was the Executive Director for Direct Investment at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), overseeing investments and private equity funds across 38 countries. His investment portfolio management ranged between $8 billion and $10 billion. Additionally, he held the position of Regional Director for the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean in the Industry, Commerce, and Agribusiness sectors at EBRD from June 2012 to March 2014.

El-Khatib’s leadership roles include chairing the Egyptian Tourism Development Company, where he oversaw the Oberoi Sahl Hasheesh Hotel and the Egyptian Tourism Company. He also contributed significantly to the Carlyle Group, a Middle East and North Africa investment fund with assets valued at around $550 million, from 2007 to June 2011. During this time, he served as Senior Advisor and Executive Director, supervising investments in North Africa, Turkey, and the Gulf Cooperation Council, and was a member of the fund’s Investment Committee.

His previous experiences include serving as Chairperson of Wadi El Nile Cement Company, Managing Partner at EFG Hermes Private Equity, and Executive Director at Obour Metal Industries and Al Ahly Development and Investment (ADI).

El-Khatib is the founder and a board member of trustees and the executive committee of the Misr El-Kheir Foundation. He has also chaired the boards of the Egyptian Private Equity Association and the Egyptian Junior Business Association. Furthermore, he holds board positions in the Egyptian Center for Economic Studies, the Egyptian Competitiveness Council, and the American Chamber of Commerce, where he serves as the treasurer.
