Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas has stated that lasting security and stability in the region hinge on the State of Palestine achieving full membership in the United Nations and gaining broader international recognition. He emphasised that this progress is vital to fostering hope for a better future for the Palestinian people and the entire region.
Speaking at the eleventh summit of the Developing-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation (D-8) in Cairo on Thursday, President Abbas highlighted the critical situation faced by Palestinians. He condemned what he described as daily massacres, acts of genocide, forced starvation, and displacement efforts. He stressed the urgent need to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2735, calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Abbas also demanded the unrestricted delivery of humanitarian aid, the assumption of responsibilities by the State of Palestine in the Gaza Strip, and the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces. Furthermore, he urged compliance with the UN General Assembly resolution concerning the advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice.
President Abbas underscored the importance of providing substantial financial support to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to allow it to continue its work.
Despite the challenges presented by the occupation and its policies, the State of Palestine acknowledges the significant role of youth and women in driving national economic growth and societal progress, Abbas stated.
Addressing regional concerns, President Abbas asserted that the occupation’s aggression against Lebanon and Syria requires immediate action to enforce relevant UN Security Council resolutions. He emphasised the need to end these violations, which he said are perpetuating instability and escalating tensions.
President Abbas concluded by expressing his appreciation to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi for hosting the summit and voiced his hope for the achievement of its goals.
