India is strengthening its commitment to artificial intelligence (AI) with a $57.35 million investment in three new Centres of Excellence (CoEs), according to IANS, a partner of TV BRICS. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced the initiative, which aims to boost AI research, develop advanced learning tools, and foster collaboration between academia and industry.
The CoEs will partner with leading universities, research institutions, and industry players to create AI-driven models specifically designed for educational purposes. These include personalised learning platforms, automated assessment tools, and AI-based tutoring systems intended to transform the student learning experience and equip them with the skills needed for the evolving digital world.
In addition to the CoEs, India plans to launch its own secure and cost-effective indigenous AI model within the next six months. This initiative will focus on developing AI systems optimised for local contexts and available in multiple Indian languages, supported by a high-end computing infrastructure.
The government also announced plans to expand infrastructure at five Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) to accommodate an additional 6,500 students, providing increased academic and hostel facilities.
