GAZA CITY: At least two Palestinians were killed and five missing on Wednesday after an overnight Israeli raid on smuggling tunnels in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip, medics said.

Four Palestinians were wounded, three of them seriously, following the strike on three tunnels on the border between Gaza and Egypt, which the army said it launched in response to rocket fire from the territory.

Two rockets were fired from Gaza late on Tuesday, striking without causing any casualties or damage, the army said.

It marked the latest violence along Gaza s borders, which have been mostly quiet since a war that Israel launched on Hamas in Gaza on Dec. 27 in response to rocket fire ended with mutual ceasefires on Jan. 18.

The ceasefires have largely held despite violations by both sides, but the past few weeks have seen an increase in both rocket fire and Israeli strikes. -AFP
