Create a festive atmosphere in your home
CAIRO: Gathering around the table with friends and family during iftar (breaking of the fast) is an essential part of Ramadan. But to further enjoy reliving the traditional elements of Ramadan, there are some simple ideas to incorporate some of these traditions to create a festive atmosphere at home.
Fawanees (lanterns, singular is fanous) stand in most Egyptian homes to mark the spirit of Ramadan. Lanterns of all shapes and sizes are on display in stalls around the city. Among the plastic, gold-colored imports from the Far East there’s an abundance of choice.
But if you’re looking for a fanous that’s slightly less garish, opt for something more traditional. You can scour the small shops in Khan El-Khalili for an old brass lantern, or visit the number of stores around town that carry traditional crafts. Razzmatazz Interiors in Maadi has a nice selection of traditionally inspired fawanees with opaque white panels, with beautiful brass lacework. Prices, however, are quite high; the average-sized lamp costs LE 725. Also, Mameluke in Zamalek has a lovely collection of colorful glass lanterns at more reasonable prices (LE 250 upwards, depending on the size and artisanship).
