CAIRO: The People’s Assembly (PA) turned down a request recently filed by the government to privatize Cairo International Stadium, Mohamed Khalil Kwaitah, MP affiliated with the National Democratic Party (NDP), told Daily News Egypt.
“The government’s proposal is totally rejected because Cairo International Stadium is one of Egypt’s landmarks, built by late president Gamal Abdel Nasser, Kwaitah said.
He referred to the stadium as Abdel Nasser’s stadium and said that it is a “national treasure and the idea of selling a national treasure is unacceptable regardless of the amount of money offered in return.
However, Kwaitah added that if the stadium is “currently not managed by a good and qualified team then [the team] can be replaced as an alternative solution.
He suggested that the government rent the stadium on a long-term contract to a private company to manage it as long as the stadium remains Egyptian property.
He stressed that the PA will never allow the sale of “Abdel Nasser’s stadium.
