AIRO: National Democratic Party MP Yasser Salah was sentenced by a Cairo misdemeanors court to two years in prison with labor and fined LE 50,000 after being caught at Cairo airport attempting to smuggle 550 mobile phones into the country, according to official news portal egynews.net.
The telephones were confiscated and Salah was also made to LE 100,000 in customs duties.
Known as Salah El-Omda, Salah represents the ruling party for El-Zawya El-Hamra constituency.
Security officers arrested Salah on Tuesday when he was caught red-handed trying to use his parliamentary immunity to evade customs on 550 mobile phones valued at around LE 1.5 million.
He was accused of tax evasion, the evasion of sales tax, the illegal import of merchandise without permission from the Ministry of Trade as well as the illegal import of telecommunication devices without a license from the National Telecommunication Regulatory Authority.
This was not the first time Salah was arrested.
He recently made headlines when he was caught entering a gambling casino in one of Cairo’s five-star hotels using a forged African passport. It is illegal for Egyptians to gamble in casinos. -Daily News Egypt.
