CAIRO: An Egyptian police official says a tour bus carrying mostly Serbians has crashed into a truck on the way to Egypt’s Red Sea coast, killing 12 people, including nine tourists.

The official says the accident occurred early Thursday as the bus was heading from the southern city of Qena to the Red Sea coastal town of Safaga.

The truck slammed into the bus on a narrow two-lane road that has been the site of several road accidents in the past.

Thirteen others were injured and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to speak to the press.

Egypt has a history of serious bus and car crashes because of speeding, careless driving and poor road conditions. -AP
