CAIRO: The Muslim Brotherhood’s official website was blocked for users in Egypt on Sunday, the day of the parliamentary elections.
Muslim Brotherhood affiliated parliamentary candidates said the blocking is an attempt by the government to further restrain the media from covering the violations that occur during the elections.
“It has been obvious even before the start of the campaigning that the government is curbing every media outlet so that it can forge the elections in the dark,” said Alam El-Sakhawy, Muslim Brotherhood candidate for Al-Basyoun area in Gharbeya.
El-Sakhawy said that the government targeted the Muslim Brotherhood’s website and left other opposition groups because the Muslim Brotherhood is the only real threat.
“The battle is between the Muslim Brotherhood on one side and the National Democratic Party and the other parties that support it on the other,” he said.
El-Sakhawy said that blocking the website will not harm the Brotherhood’s chances in the elections as they don’t rely only on the internet and have other channels through which they communicate with the public.
