RAFAH: Egyptian security and medical officials say an Egyptian soldier has been killed in exchange of fire with smugglers near the border with Israel.
The officials said Rami Ahmad Abdel-Latif, 20, was killed early Saturday some 20 km south of Rafah near the Israeli border. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to speak to the media.
Hundreds of migrants, mainly Africans, seeking political asylum and jobs try to cross into Israel with the help of Bedouin traffickers. Egypt has killed dozens of migrants in the past two years, drawing criticism from rights groups.
