CAIRO: Flights between Egypt and the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi have resumed, an airport official said on Tuesday, with plans to expand the routes to Tripoli and the southern city of Sabha.

The first Libyan flight arrived in Cairo from Benghazi late on Monday and headed back to Libya an hour later, the official said.

There will be three weekly flights to and from Benghazi on Sunday, Monday and Thursday.

The Libyan carrier has also asked Egyptian civil aviation authorities to allow the resumption of eight flights a week to Tripoli and a weekly flight to Sabha.

Most airlines suspended flights in and out of Libya after the February outbreak of the uprising that toppled Moammar Qaddafi.
