Al-Watan Newspaper headquarters in Dokki was torched early on Saturday by a group of unknown assailants. The fire completely destroyed the entrance of the building before the fire fighters arrived.
Around 40 attackers had gathered to make their way inside the building, violently attacking and vandalising equipment and offices, causing severe property damage.
Fire fighters arrived at the scene and were able to control the fire. No injuries were reported, according to Al-Watan newspaper’s website.
Saleh Ibrahim, a staff member of Al-Watan, said: “The ground floor of the building is destroyed; other than that, the fire was contained.”
He added: “The attack is believed to have been carried out by Ultras, but we cannot confirm anything.”
Ibrahim said he suspects their involvement because of a story published on Friday by the newspaper about Ultras meeting with the Muslim Brotherhood leader, Khairat El-Shater, prior to a divisive verdict in the Port Said football trial.
However, Ultras have denied outright any involvement in the attack.
