Protesters staging a sit-in in Tahrir Square were attacked early on Sunday morning. Unknown assailants attacked the square at dawn, burning tents erected by demonstrators, according to state-owned news agency MENA. No serious injuries were reported.
Those conducting the sit-in had put up several tents in the centre of the square and another two near the Egyptian Museum.
Numbers in Tahrir Square have fallen dramatically recently. On Friday protesters against Prosecutor General Tala’at Abdallah and the Muslim Brotherhood marched from the High Court building, with a few hundred arriving in Tahrir Square.
A brief fight ensued on the way to the square between protesters and armed men near Bustan Computer Mall. The assailants claimed they were employees at the mall and had decided to protect their stores after they had allegedly been broken into and looted.
Tents and protesters in the square were previously attacked, and security forces have attempted to re-open Tahrir Square to traffic several times.
The square, which was opened to traffic on Friday, remained open on Sunday afternoon.
