Clashes broke out in the vicinity of the Aswan University students’ dormitories on Friday between students and unknown assailants, leaving several students injured.
The clashes erupted after a student residing in the dormitories engaged in a fight with a microbus driver, who brought more than 50 others to the dorms and attacked the building with Molotov cocktails and rocks, according to Tarek Bassiouny, a student at Aswan University.
Bassiouny added that several students were injured during the clashes, including some students who were staying at the city hospital. “The dorms’ security personnel tried to stop the thugs’ attack, but they could not as they were few and armed. We then called the police, which came two hours after the clashes came to an end.”
Aswan University’s student union called for suspending studies in the university and condemned the university’s reaction to the attack in a statement issued on Saturday.
The statement described the reactions of police and university administration as “shameful”, and called for investigating the incident. The statement also called on the Ministry of Higher Education to intervene and find a solution to the issue.
