Mahmoud Nafadi, deputy editor of Al-Gomhoreya newspaper, has accused members of the Constituent Assembly and Shura Council of misappropriation of EGP 25m worth of public funds, state-owned Al-Ahram reported on Saturday.
Prosecutor General Hisham Barakat is expected to investigate the allegations. The accusations were levied against Ahmed Fahmy, speaker of the now-dissolved Shura Council, and Hossam El-Gheriani, chairman of the assembly tasked with writing the 2012 constitution.
Nafadi accused Fahmy and El-Gheriani of wasting a total of EGP 25m of the Shura council’s budget, claiming that EGP 10,000 had been given to each member of the 100-strong Constituent Assembly, and EGP 25,000 had been awarded to each committee head, Al-Ahram reported.
Nafadi also claimed that members of the Constitutional Bureau, a subdivision within the assembly, received a sum of EGP 40,000 and that that every member of the Assembly was awarded a laptop computer and enjoyed expenses-paid stays at the Shepherd Hotel, according to Al-Ahram.
Fahmy also stands accused of wasting EGP 3m of the Shura Council’s budget on travel not related to work, Al-Ahram reported.
