Bassem Mohsen, a protester who sustained serious injuries during Friday protests, died at New Qasr El-Aini Teaching Hospital on Sunday afternoon.
The 22-year-old activist was shot in the head during a protest of the Anti-Coup Alliance on Friday and was transferred to Cairo where he remained in critical condition for two days. Mohsen was one of dozens of protesters who lost their eyes to sniper fire during the 2011 Mohamed Mahmoud clashes.
Mohsen was also sentenced to two years by a military tribunal in Suez in August 2012 after he was arrested in July during a hearing for eight activists who were being tried for charges relating to the May violence in Abbasiya. He was subsequently pardoned.
He reportedly supported and participated in demonstrations on 30 June that paved the way to Morsi’s ouster, and was active in demonstrations against the ousted president during his one-year rule.
